Why are nearly all cars in the US automatic?

I was watching the Wright Stuff yesterday when they talked about women drivers being bad drivers *ahem* :rolleyes: *sigh* and they showed this clip from YouTube of a car that was driven right into a test centre in America and like the presenter said, they have no excuse because in America its even easier for them as their cars are almost all automatics, which are (supposedly) even easier to drive.
I had known from talking to Americans online that most cars are automatics but I just wondered, why is that? is there any particular reason? Anyone know?
